Over 5 years ago, realizing the need, we opened a Day Center for the Homeless. The homeless have to leave the night shelters at 5:30 a.m. and cannot return until evening. Before we opened, the homeless who were ill, elderly, or could not find work had no where to go, but under bridges, abandoned house, cars or public buildings where they were not welcome. We quickly outgrew our first building.
We have now leased a building with a plan to buy. The new building is at 1739 Fenwick St. (Corner of Fenwick and Crawford Ave.) This was formerly the Beauford Glass building. It has approximately 3,000 square feet. The building is in good condition, but we have to put in walls to divide it into the rooms that we need. In addition to the Day Center, we will have 2 handicapped restrooms, laundry facilities, a shower, a training/conference room, a sick/medical screening room, counseling offices, a storage room for the homeless clients’ personal items, and a space in the front of the building that is tentatively planned as a non-profit retail space, probably a thrift shop. We feel that the retail space will give us a training opportunity for our clients, as well as, an income to offer more services to the clients.
All this in addition to all we already have at the old building.
The latest survey shows that there are 700 homeless men, women, and children in Augusta. 82% have physical or mental health problems. 40% are veterans. 26% are over 50 years old. 7% are over 60 with the oldest being 85 years old. Most of the homeless work, but do not make enough to afford housing. Many are waiting to receive Social Security Disability Benefits which now takes 3 years.
There were over 10,000 visits to our Day Center last year.
September 1, 2006: Up date on renovation of new building: Plumbing in; rooms framed in; electric work nearing completion. Thanks to a lot of very generous people, most of the building materials have been donated. There are some items we have not received yet. Below is a list of the things that are still needed. Please stop by and see how God is blessing us. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ NEEDS FOR NEW FACILITY
